Urban Grid also develops, finances and owns distributed generation solar projects (500kW-10MW) designed to generate consistent operating performance and predictable long-term customer savings. Our focus in behind the meter solar is long term ownership of commercial solar assets secured through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) with commercial, utility, non-profit and government customers. CEO & Founder
Frank DePew is the CEO and President of Urban Grid. In 1991, he founded and built Mid-Atlantic Pension Group that was a pioneer in investment management and accounting for 401k plans. This company was sold to Ceridian Corporation in 1998 and Frank served as President of Ceridian Retirement Services until 2000 at which time he retired to pursue other interests. In 2010, he founded Urban Grid and has led its growth to become a leading distributed generation and utility-scale developer on the east coast, having now completed numerous projects for municipal and corporate customers. Frank’s team originated the utility-scale pipeline and is now backed by a major UK based family office.
Philip Pels is the Founder and CEO of PP Asset Management, a family office that specializes in investing and working with highly sophisticated Solar Developers. He has overseen the development and sale of over 25 utility scale solar projects globally over the last decade. Philip sits on the UGSP board providing deep commercial insight and strategic direction as our business expands into PJM and southern territories.
Mark Cooke serves as Director – Investor Representative on the Urban Grid Solar Projects, LLC Board of Directors. Mark’s brings substantial experience both as a business owner and an investor to the board. Mark is currently the Dealer Principal / GM of Euroclassics Porsche in Richmond, VA, as well as Financial Manager at Million Air Richmond FBO. Mark has extensive direct experience in the solar industry as a direct investor in Urban Grid’s behind-the-meter solar projects totaling more than 15 MW.
Chief Financial Officer
In addition to being CFO of urban Grid Solar Projects, Mark is also the CFO of PP Asset Management. Between 2005 and 2013, during his time at Ernst & Young and Centrica plc (owner of direct energy), he led onshore and offshore wind project financing totaling in excess of $2 billion. Since 2013, Mark has led the solar investment strategy of the PP Asset Management business and has sold over 20 projects across Europe and the Americas with a capital value in excess of $1 billion. Mark is deeply involved in our project financing and PPA strategies.
Vice President – Development
Simon has nine years of solar development experience; having managed the successful deployment of over 500 MW grid-connected ground-mounts and 10 MW rooftop corporate PPAs. Simon was Development Manager with Lightsource RE, Europe’s largest solar developer & operator, and later joined PPAM in London and now Urban Grid in our Washington, D.C. office as Vice President of Development where he oversees the delivery of Urban Grid’s growing US solar pipeline.
